Tips for Success from Mr. Ward

Tests and Quizzes
1. Use outlines and reviews as a way to guide you while studying.
2. Actively listen in class. Try to take effective notes during class time. Teachers almost always drop hints about the content of upcoming tests, quizzes and exams.
3. Make a help appointment before a major test. A teacher can assess your study techniques and guide you to the right strategies for your learning style.
4. Start studying early and review material frequently. Studying a little bit each night the week before a test is much more effective and far less stressful than cramming.
5. Get a good night's sleep before the day of major tests.
6. Employ study and reading strategies that work for you. Examples include SQ3R, KWL, the BDA approach, webbing, concept mapping and Cornell note taking. If you're unsure about the use of study strategies, ask an English Language Arts teacher about them.
7. Balance work, play and school. Ask yourself, "Is my part time job or extra-curricular commitments monopolizing my time and bringing down my grades?" Prioritize.
Major Assignments
1. Start early.
2. Examine the assignment instructions carefully before starting.
3. Revise and edit your work continually. Ask someone to proofread your work for clarity and writing mechanics before you go to final edit.
4. If you are ensure about an aspect of the assignment, ask the teacher.
5. If you are concerned about your progress, ask your teacher to look over your work and to provide you with constructive feedback.
6. At the completion of the assignment, look over the assignment instructions and assessment rubric again. Ensure that you have completed all the components of the assignment and that you have met expectations.
